Dr. Hastings earned a B.S. in Biology from the College of William & Mary; an M.S.Ed in preK-12 Curriculum & Instruction from Old Dominion University; and a Ph.D. in preK-12 Curriculum & Instruction from Old Dominion University where she served as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant. 

Prior to earning her doctorate and moving to higher education, Dr. Hastings taught at both the Elementary & Secondary levels in Virginia. She found her passion was teaching math and science to underserved students in high poverty schools. During her time as a public school teacher she received the Superintendent's Award for Excellence in Teaching & Leadership and was awarded lifelong Meritorious Teacher Designation on her Virginia Teaching License. Before coming to Longwood, she worked at Averett University where she earned Faculty of the Year in 2012. 

Dr. Hastings teaches introductory and senior level courses in the Elementary Education Program and finds joy in mentoring future teachers. Additionally, she has partnered with colleagues across campus on the NSF Noyce Track 1 Scholarship Grant on which she is Co-PI. She serves as Chapter Counselor for LU's Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and started the now yearly event with Prince Edward County Schools, Lancer for a Day.
