Mary Tackett is an Assistant Professor of Education and Coordinator of the Elementary and Middle School Program at Longwood University.
Mary earned her B.A., M.A., Ed.S., and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, where she was named Graduate Student of the Year and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Outstanding Recent Alumna.
Currently, Mary supervises preservice teachers and teaches classes on the foundations of literacy instruction, elementary literacy methods, and human growth and development. Prior to her work at Longwood, Mary taught first, second, and fifth grade, and served as an English and reading tutor and Literacy Coach. She was also the Graduate Director and Co-Chair of the Education Department at Sweet Briar College.
Mary's research interests focus on children’s literature and how teachers can utilize diverse children’s books within classroom contexts to address salient societal issues.
